Fall Equinox

Somehow, the fall equinox is already upon us. As the light and dark halves of each day reaches its balancing point and the daylight gets shorter, we’re squeezing the last golden bits of summer out of the fields and releasing with big exhales into the cooler temperatures and crisp vegetables of fall. The goldenrod has the hillsides around our fields ablaze with impossibly brilliant blooms, dripping with color in the sideways light of the sun lower in the sky. We’re rising in the dark once again and driving into the sun in both directions. We’re reflecting on the challenges and successes of the current season and planning for the future. We still have 8 weeks left of farm store harvests and two Bloomfield Market pop ups (10/10 and 11/21) and some of our favorite produce thrives best in the cooler temps.

Highlights from farm this equinox season include:

  • The arrival of winter squash to the harvest lists! Find delicata, acorn, and butternut squash on the farm store, alongside tender fall kale, abundant parsley, dill and cilantro, and lots of other fall staples including potatoes from John Paul’s Farm and celery from ColdCo. We also have hot and sweet Italian sausage back in stock from Blackberry Meadows, as well as their bacon, eggs from Pittsburgh Pastures, and chicken from Mother Earth Farm.

Farmer Share Box

  • We’re also offering a farmers share box option on the farm store! It is a sampling of the abundance from our fields. The share will change week to week, depending on what is in peak season. You can expect a combination of fruits (ex. peppers, squash, zucchini), greens (ex. kale, spring mix), herbs (ex. parsley, tulsi, dill, catnip), roots (ex. celeriac, radishes), alliums (garlic and onions).

  • As a reminder, we have four pickup locations to choose from for your farm store orders! Bantha Tea Bar in Garfield, Jackworth Gingerbeer in East End/Larimer, Hitchhiker Brewing in Sharpsburg, and Allegheny City Brewing in the Northside. Place your order between Saturday at 10AM and Tuesday at 7PM weekly, to shop the current harvests, and pick your order up on Thursday evenings.

  • We’re collaborating on a special farm dinner with The Vandal on October 4th. The good folks at The Vandal have been wonderful supporters of our little farm and we love growing produce for their decadent seasonal menus. This edition of their Sunday Supper will feature all of our fall produce, and is the perfect way to dance through the portal from summer to fall as we celebrate 10 years of farming and The Vandal rounds out their 11th summer of serving delicious food in a cherished neighborhood spot. Seats sold out quickly! Thank you to those who made reservations, we look forward to sharing a meal.

  • We’ll be back at Bloomfield Saturday market on October 10th with all the fall goodies. Winter squash and pumpkins are the stars this time of year, and you’ll find us there with a diverse array of varieties from delicata, butternut, and acorn to long pie pumpkin, candy roaster melon, honeynut, and more. Beans and greens season is also upon us, and we’re excited to bring you some Bean W0rld specialties soon, alongside our tender fall cooking greens. We planted our cantaloupe late this year and might even have some special wild fall musk melons to go with your pumpkins!

The seasons emerge one after another in more of a continuous spiral than successive closed loops, and as we celebrate 10 years of be.wild.er farm, we’re putting care towards how this turn of the spiral shapes the next. The harvests we put up for winter, the sales we make this fall, the cover crop we sow, and the relationships we tend now will shape how and what we farm next spring. Thank you for meeting and supporting us as we adapt and grow each turn of the season.

with big care & gratitude,

crescent & wilder be’s
