The summer abundance continues and our days are spent harvesting and tending to the summer crops while preparing beds and planting for fall’s bounty in the breaks that the weather offers us. In the mix of these farm to-do’s we are also preparing to celebrate the fast-approaching wedding of two of bewilder’s team, Sarah and Crescent <3

The practical purpose of this newsletter is to let you know that the Farm Store will be closed while we celebrate the wedding next week, August 15th- August 21st, so place your orders by 7pm this Tuesday August 11th to ensure that you’re well stocked while we’re away. We will be back open for orders August 22! As a reminder, we now have Bantha Tea Bar as a pick-up location in Garfield and Mother Earth Farm whole chickens are listed on the Farm Store. And if you haven't already done so, please fill out our feedback survey to help give us a sense of how you’re experiencing the new farm store model.

It was lovely to see so many folks at the Bloomfield Market this past Saturday! Mark your calendars for August 29th as we’ll be back at the Bloomfield Saturday Market and would love to see you in person.

And now for the main purpose of this newsletter: a love story.

A disclaimer that this version of the Sarah and Cresc love story is told by me, Megan, and as such might be a bit skewed to my experience of their love. This is probably an accurate enough way to recount a love story, or any story for that matter, as we’re all looking through -and being witnessed through- the various lenses that give shape and meaning to life.

I’ve known Sarah since college. We were roommates sophomore year and were the type of roommates that really like each other, not the stuck together kind, but the kind who choose to spend countless hours adventuring and hanging because we thoroughly enjoyed each others company. I’ve always admired Sarah’s visionary nature, her tactile abilities of creating, her ability to accomplish what she sets her mind to, and -probably the most foundational aspect of Sarah that has led to our enduring friendship- is that she is incredibly honest, sensitive, and caring.

One of the cool things about being friends with someone for their entire adult life is that you get to see the ways their romantic relationships mirror their personal evolution. While Sarah has had some very solid relationships in the time that I’ve known her, I’ve usually felt something along the lines of “this person is cool and all but I don’t think they’re quite right for my friend”. When Sarah and Cresc started dating I felt differently, feeling early on that my friend had met her match.

Cresc and Sarah met working on the farm. Sarah had been working on the farm for a few years when I hired Cresc in 2022. Crescent came to us with a deep knowledge of herbal medicine, a creative practice centering print-making, and a community based approach to mutual aid and collective well-being. I felt lucky that such a smart, hard-working, and thoughtful person had found the farm and reached out seeking employment.

While they met at the farm, I believe that they were destined to find each other one way or another- my, perhaps biased, opinion being that the farm was the perfect place for their relationship to begin.

The years since Cresc and Sarah met have held so much, both for their relationship and for the farm. Notably are seasons of distance, travel, and then relocation as Cresc completed a degree on the West coast- working for Bewilder during their summer breaks- both of them traveling regularly and Sarah ultimately moving to be with Cresc as they finished their program. From a farm management perspective, it was challenging having two excellent employees on hiatus at the same time, but from the perspective of my complete self, it was beautiful to witness the deepening love between two people I care about.

Since becoming farm co-owners and working closely as a team, I’ve now gotten to know Cresc and Sarah as collaborators in the evolution of this farm. As you might imagine, it takes a lot of trust and communication to co-run a business and co-manage a farm. In this process, I’ve gotten to witness the ways their unique strengths support this farm and the ways that they continually support each other and those around them.

Since starting the farm in 2016, I have been repeatedly given the gift of community and friendship formed through the farm- the hard work of farming forever feeling worth it for the incredible connections that form as a result. The farm's role in the love story of Sarah and Cresc remains a pinnacle of the gifts that the farm has given.
